New York Fashion Week 2020 Days 1, 2, & 3: RVNG, Jason Wu, Badgley Mischka, & Raisa Vanessa

The world's largest fashion celebration, New York Fashion Week, went virtual for the first time in the event's 77-year history. While many mourned the loss of the live aspect of the show, others (like me!) were awestruck at the accessibility this new situation allowed, with designers using innovative technology, the richest fabrics, and, of course, social distancing practices to bring the vision behind their collections to life for audiences all around the world. Virtual fashion shows allowed for the designers minds to run wild with imagination, taking the ideas thought to be confined to their sketch pads and making them in to larger-than-life presentations. As part of the event, I had the opportunity to attend various fashion shows, and wanted to share my thoughts on the designers and collections with all of you!! Thank you so much to New York Fashion Week for inviting me, I am so excited to see how this event will continue to be accessible to fashion lovers around the globe! Look out for Part 2 of my NYFW post, coming soon! Disclaimer: All photos have been provided to me by the designers' PR Teams.

To kick off the event, couture label RVNG, created by Canadian designer Jordan Stewart, unveiled their Spring/Summer 2021 collection. Set against the backdrop of the historic Osgoode Hall building in Toronto, the collection was alive with pastel jumpsuits, clean, stylish silhouettes, and a feminine sensibility.

Above I've listed my personal Top 5 looks from the collection. I think the designer did a beautiful job of blending what you traditionally think of in a springtime collection (florals, relaxed shapes, and pastel colors) with modern cuts and innovative designs. The more business-casual looks are things I would totally wear for a day out or even a work meeting. Specifically, the lilac dress with embroidered flower details and a button-up torso really caught my eye. The white underskirt really brings out the embroidered details in the dress, and draws attention to the precise detailing that RVNG is quickly making a staple out of.

Jason Wu, the namesake brand of the New York designer, transported his guests to Tulum, where he got married a few years ago and spent his entire quarantine dreaming of. The runway of the show was sponsored by Lowes, who provided the lush foliage, which was later donated to a local plant nursery. Of the collection, which was completely designed and created during quarantine, Wu says "I wanted to create a collection that reminds me of the bright, tropical hues that recall so many happy memories. The theme of the collection is about escapism – -because fashion should inspire and make us feel happy. "

Here are my Top 5 looks! I think it is very clear throughout the collection there is a specific vibe of being laid back and casual, a beach-y feel, if you will. I would honestly wear these outfits for a spotless summer day, I can see myself picking fruits or just lounging around my pool. I absolutely love the draping and the functionality of the outfits, especially the blue romper with pockets (the bows are just too cute!), and the white blazer look, which has the perfect mix of sophisticated and casual.

The next runway that I attended was Badgley Mishka. They chose to present the Spring 2021 collection in a short film, which sweeps you away to the glitteringly sophisticated countryside and buries you in their signature gowns. You can watch the presentation below:

Below are my Top 5 Looks from the collection:

This entire collection absolutely took my breath away. It was so difficult to choose just five looks! Badgley Mishka is known for their traditional elegance and simplicity, and I think that this collection really elevates that. It takes the theme of a summer spent inside, daydreaming of jetting off to an exotic locations just to experience the thrill of something new, and runs with it. In particular, the details that stuck with me are the edges of the flowing dress that read "Bon Voyage", and look very much like a 60s-era headscarf, the cut of the neckline and the draped sleeves of the red wrap dress, and the studded belt on the red peony coat dress. Every thread in the dresses seem to be sealed with a modern touch of love, the type of warm feeling that embraces you, much like a postcard from a relative being signed off with a handwritten "xoxo".

RaisaVanessa, the Turkish label created by twins Raisa & Vanessa Sason, has already been known for dressing celebrities like Katy Perry in their wondrously youthful designs. For their Spring/Summer 2021 collection, RaisaVanessa invited the audience to The Lakehouse, a new world of vacation, escapism, and nostalgia. In one of the more stylishly inventive fashion photoshoots, here are my top looks for this collection:

Just as a disclaimer, I had not known of RaisaVanessa before seeing this show. That being said, I was completely blown out of the water! I think that location is key when it comes to these virtual presentations, and I was already predisposed to love this collection with it's lake and dock backdrop. But when the designs, in all of their bright colors and metallic glory, started pouring down the runway, I could not keep my jaw shut! Out of all of the runway shows, this was the one collection in which I absolutely adored every single look that walked down. My absolute favorite moment from the show was seeing the red gingham dresses walk down the runway. The stark contrast of the foggy, slightly more mysterious background with the bright red figures strutting down the makeshift runway felt empowering. The multicolored jumpsuit with golden accents and that absolutely glorious wide-brimmed hat deserves a special mention, as something I will from now on wear in my quarantine daydreams in which I am a millionaire and live somewhere on the French Riviera, attending a summer party where I hobnob with my closest friends. RaisaVanessa knows how to weave a photographic memory in the very threads of their fabric, and uses their collective designing talents to bring light to a grey world. The Lakehouse collection will live on in my memory as my favorite collections from my first ever fashion week.
